Change in the reimbursement of medical aids in Switzerland

At the moment, the compulsory health care insurance (AOMS) reimburses separately the materials that appear on the list of medical aids and equipment (EMAp/MiGeL), which patients use themselves, or with the help of a non-professional person. On the other hand, there is no separate reimbursement for the medical material used by nursing staff in nursing homes and outpatient care (e.g., incontinence aids, bandages).

On May 27, 2020, the Federal Council adopted the modification of the Insurance Law (KVG/LAMal) on the reimbursement of medical aids and equipment. This will lead to uniform reimbursement of medical material throughout Switzerland. In the near future, health insurers will have to bear the costs of the medical material regardless of whether it is used directly by the insured person, by a non-professional person, or by the nursing staff. This amendment guarantees the financing of the medical material used in outpatient settings and in nursing homes.
