Approval of the Digital Health Strategy of the National Health System in Spain

On December 2, 2021, the Digital Health Strategy of the National Health System (SNS) was approved by the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS) with an endowment of more than €675 million within the Transformation, Recovery, and Resilience Mechanism of the Government of Spain. The Digital Health Strategy is expected to promote the SNS values such as equity, sustainability, and transparency and boost the transformation of the SNS care model in the upcoming years. The Strategy is based on three main lines of action:

  • The development of digital health services aimed at people, organizations, and processes that make up the health protection system, with a focus on equity;
  • The generalization of the interoperability of health information with, for example, actions such as e-interconsultation or case management for the patient and family care;
  • The analysis of data related to health, its determinants, and the health system. It was outlined that the methodologies are needed for the processing, analysis, and interpretation of the enormous volume of data.

Among the specifically mentioned projects in this context are the ones allowing to calculate the risk of hospitalization and mortality for patients with chronic diseases in order to act on modifiable factors and continuous glucose monitoring.

Likewise, the Digital Health Strategy includes the mechanisms for its governance and follow-up within the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System.
