Applications for Medical Specialist Care and Research program are now open in the Netherlands

The Medical Specialist Care and Research (MedZO) program stimulates knowledge development on the effectiveness and efficiency of appropriate care in general hospitals, rehabilitation centers, categorical hospitals or institutions, and independent specialist medical care centers. The MedZO program was launched in 2024 as part of the Integrated Care Agreement (IZA) framework and has a total budget of €40 million until 2028. 

On September 19, 2025, the Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) launched submission of grant applications for the “Line 1: Appropriate and efficient care - Round 2” of the MedZO program. A total of €18 million is available for this subsidy round. For applications by an individual institution, the maximum budget that can be requested is €500,000 per application. The submission of applications is closing on December 2, 2025.

On October 14, 2025, the “Preparatory implementation activities Round 2 - specialist medical care” of the MedZO program was initiated. This round will support preparatory (de)implementation activities for non-pharmacotherapeutic care interventions covered by the Health Insurance Act and classified as specialist medical care. Applications are eligible for a grant if the intervention is part of the basic health insurance and the project concerns a topic that is included in the Care Evaluation & Appropriate Use (ZE&GG) Implementation Agenda. This subsidy round has a total of €500,000 available for allocation. The maximum budget that can be requested per application is €50,000. The deadline for submitting grant applications is December 9, 2025.
