Administrative reorganization in Norway came into force
Changes in the Norwegian central health administration announced by the government in May 2023 came into force on January 1, 2024. The Directorate of Health was refined as a government body with expanded responsibility in digitalization, the development of health care services, and public health. The reorganization included the following:
- The Directorate of Health merged with the Directorate for e-Health. The Directorate of e-Health content (coding, standards, etc.) has not yet been moved to the Directorate of Health website and will continue to be published at ehealth.no until further notice;
- The Directorate of Health takes over public health tasks from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH);
- The health registers are moved from the Directorate of Health to NIPH;
The reorganization will provide more clarified roles and distribution of responsibilities between the various agencies. The government suggests that changes provide better support to the municipal sector, better utilization of health data, a closer link between digitization and service development, and strengthened health preparedness overall.
