2026 Swedish NordDRG system released

In November 2025, the annual update of the Swedish NordDRG system was published to come into force on January 1, 2026. 

Five new DRGs were introduced. Four of them are highly nonspecific: Z72 “Not groupable in NordDRG” in different care settings. One new DRG concerns remote nursing care.

In 2026, there is a total of 1983 DRGs, of which 810 are for specialized inpatient care, 655 for specialized outpatient care, and 518 for primary care.

The 2026 DRG cost weights were published as well. To obtain a DRG tariff, the cost weight must be multiplied by a base rate of 81,142 SEK.

The Hybrid DRGs catalog for 2026 approved in Germany

On November 13, 2025, the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) announced that the 2026 Hybrid DRGs catalog had been approved. Consultation for the proposed 2026/27 NHS Payment Scheme is open in England

On November 17, 2025, NHS England published a draft 2026/27 NHS Payment Scheme (NHSPS) and launched a consultation. While the overall payment model remains, some specific changes are proposed, including new blended payments for urgent and emergency care, radiotherapy, and genomic testing, as well as two new Best Practice Tariffs (BPT) to incentivize day case procedures, and 10 Year Health Plan referral-to-treatment (RTT) priorities. The deadline for comment submission is December 16, 2025.

2026 Swedish procedure coding system (KVÅ) released

On October 27, 2025, the annual update of the Swedish procedure coding system (KVÅ) was released to come into force on January 1, 2026. A total of 35 new surgical (KKÅ) procedure codes were added in the fields of nephrology and urology, obstetrics and gynecology, interventional radiology, men’s health, and radiotherapy. Furthermore, 90 new medical (KMÅ) procedure codes were introduced concerning diagnostic imaging, radiology, gastrointestinal, and other fields.

Two thematic horizon scans in the cancer field were launched in Sweden

In October 2025, the Swedish Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency (TLV) launched two new thematic horizon scans focusing on cancer care. The scans aim to identify innovative medical technologies that may be evaluated within the national Orderly introduction framework for medical technologies. Stakeholders, including industry representatives, are invited to submit proposals by November 30, 2025.

National development projects for precision diagnostics of solid tumors in Sweden

On October 20, 2025, Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS) announced the launch of five strategic development projects aimed at extending access to advanced diagnostics nationwide. The projects will focus on updating national GMS gene panel (big NGS panel for solid tumors), liquid biopsies, cell-free tumor DNA (ctDNA) for diagnosis and follow-up of metastatic breast cancer, gene panels for hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) cancer, and improving diagnosis of sarcoma.
