Centralization of complex treatments for cancer and vascular diseases in the Netherlands

Since March 2025, the Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZIN) has been establishing new standards for vascular surgery and cancer treatment, resulting in the centralization of complex interventions only in hospitals that consistently demonstrate a high volume of such procedures. In November 2025, the seven regions agreed on which hospitals would provide complex cancer and vascular procedures starting in 2026, with a one-year transition period before the new care distribution began on January 1, 2027.

2026 Swedish procedure coding system (KVÅ) released

On October 27, 2025, the annual update of the Swedish procedure coding system (KVÅ) was released to come into force on January 1, 2026. A total of 35 new surgical (KKÅ) procedure codes were added in the fields of nephrology and urology, obstetrics and gynecology, interventional radiology, men’s health, and radiotherapy. Furthermore, 90 new medical (KMÅ) procedure codes were introduced concerning diagnostic imaging, radiology, gastrointestinal, and other fields.

Changes in the OPCS procedure coding classification to take effect in April 2026 in England

In November 2025, NHS England released a final summary of core changes between OPCS-4.10 and OPCS-4.11, a procedure coding classification updated every three years. Multiple changes were implemented, including 572 new four-character (subcategory) codes in various fields, such as cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, gastroenterology, urology and nephrology, obstetrics and gynecology, men’s health, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, orthopedics, spine, interventional radiology, and radiotherapy. OPCS-4.11 is expected to take effect on April 1, 2026.

Two thematic horizon scans in the cancer field were launched in Sweden

In October 2025, the Swedish Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency (TLV) launched two new thematic horizon scans focusing on cancer care. The scans aim to identify innovative medical technologies that may be evaluated within the national Orderly introduction framework for medical technologies. Stakeholders, including industry representatives, are invited to submit proposals by November 30, 2025.

Technologies prioritized for evaluation within the National HTA Program in 2025 in Italy

On October 14, 2025, the National Agency for Regional Health Services (AGENAS) published the list of technologies prioritized for evaluation within the National HTA Program for Medical Devices in 2025. Technologies from the fields of endocrinology, men’s health, neurology/neurosurgery, and radiotherapy have been identified as priorities and are currently undergoing health technology assessment.

A regular update of the Danish SKS coding system from October 2025

The Danish Health Data Authority quarterly updates the Health Care Classification System (SKS). The latest version was published in mid-September 2025 to come into force on October 1, 2025. Among other changes, four new procedure codes were introduced concerning men's health, radiotherapy, and surgical procedures.

Med Tech-related health technology assessments in Wales in August 2025

In August 2025, Health Technology Wales (HTW) accomplished two full appraisals on long-length peripheral intravenous catheters (LPCs) for difficult intravenous access and photo-plethysmography for managing atrial fibrillation. In addition, two Med Tech-related Topic Exploration Reports were published in the radiotherapy and e-health fields.

The 2026 version of the Swiss CHOP code classification was published

On July 31, 2025, the Swiss Federal Statistics Office (UFS) released the systematic version of the Swiss classification of surgical interventions (CHOP) for 2026. The CHOP classification is now available in German and will come into force on January 1, 2026. Multiple new procedure codes were introduced in various fields, including the cardiovascular, ENT, extracorporeal treatments, interventional radiology, nephrology and urology, orthopedics, peripheral vascular, and radionucleide therapy.

New procedure codes in Finland from January 2026

In July 2025, the Finnish classification of procedures (THL) was updated. Forty-five procedure codes concerning ophthalmology, radiology, e-Health, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, and some other fields were introduced to come into force on January 1, 2026.

Med Tech-related health technology assessments in Wales in March-April 2025

In March-April 2025, Health Technology Wales (HTW) accomplished one full appraisal of permanent implant brachytherapy devices for unresectable pancreatic cancer. Five Med Tech-related Topic Exploration Reports were published (on superior rectal artery embolization, glucose monitoring systems in neonates, gender-affirming surgery, telemetric intracranial pressure monitoring, tumor-profiling tests to guide bisphosphonate treatment in cancer).
