Conditional funding of medical technologies will be replaced by the Subsidy Scheme for Promising Care in the Netherlands

Research must determine whether new methods of medical care can be included in a basic package. Before a new method of care can be reimbursed from the basic health insurance package, evidence is required that it is at least as effective as standard treatment. However, this type of research is often expensive, requires a lot of expertise and lasts for several years. With the budget that is now available for this, developers, hospitals and researchers can set up this research more easily. After the research project has ended, an assessment by the Dutch Healthcare Institute will be made to determine whether the new method can be included in the basic package.

The Healthcare Institute is preparing for the implementation of the new subsidy scheme in the coming months. Currently, there are still plans for conditional reimbursement for evaluation of medical technologies that has started in recent years. The old regulation remains in effect for these ongoing processes.
