Med Tech-related technology assessments and clinical guidelines from NICE in the first half of May 2018
Interventional Procedure Guidance is developed for most of the novel interventional procedures entering the English market. The program focuses solely on the clinical evidence. Recommendations may vary from ‘for research only’ to ‘for use with standard arrangements for clinical governance, consent, and audit.' Recommendations are not binding, although they are followed by providers and commissioners.
In the first half of May NICE published one new Interventional Procedure Guidance Percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty for fetal critical aortic stenosis, which covers evidence-based recommendations on percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty for fetal critical aortic stenosis. This involves placing a catheter into the baby’s heart, while the baby is still in the womb. Current evidence on the safety and efficacy of percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty for fetal critical aortic stenosis is limited in quantity and the results are inconsistent. Therefore, this procedure should only be used in the context of research.
MedTech Innovation Briefing is the NICE's advice program for innovative technologies. It provides an overview of clinical effectiveness, safety and cost. It does not offer a formal guidance, and it, therefore, does not provide any recommendations.
Three new Medtech Innovation Briefings, including AlignRT for intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery(patient position monitoring system, for guiding intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery), QAngio XA 3D/QFR imaging software for assessing coronary obstructions (it is used to assess fractional flow reserve (FFR) non-invasively) and Point-of-care diagnostic testing in primary care for strep A infection in sore throat(11 point-of-care tests for diagnosing group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus (strep A) throat infection) have been published the first half of May.
