Projects awarded under the 2025 round of the Appropriate Care Framework in the Netherlands

The Appropriate Care Framework program (2024-2028) is a joint initiative of all parties involved in healthcare, with the Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw), the Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZIN), and the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) as strategic partners. The program contributes to the movement towards appropriate care, stimulates knowledge development, and research infrastructure to decide which care is reimbursed under the basic health insurance based on value-driven care (effective, relevant to the patient, and with optimal use of people, resources, and materials).

In August 2025, seventeen projects were awarded under the subsidy round “Preparatory implementation activities Round 1” of the Appropriate Care Framework program.

Examples of the awarded projects include:

  • Blueprint for digital patient support around surgery and recovery;
  • Examination for prostate cancer during consultation;
  • Reduction of inappropriate use of urinary and intravenous catheters;
  • Gene expression profiles in patients with breast cancer and indication for chemotherapy.

The subsidy round focused on preparatory (de)implementation activities that can be carried out for a healthcare intervention that is reimbursed under basic health insurance. The aim was to draw up a concrete action plan for an upscaling strategy after the project's completion.
