TAVI approved in Norway for patients with severe aortic stenosis across all surgical risk groups
In 2013, Norway established a framework, "New Method," for the introduction of innovations into the health care system through either a national or hospital-based health technology assessment. In this framework, all innovations should undergo HTA before being funded.
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI/TAVR) in severe aortic stenosis treatment across all surgical risk groups was being evaluated within the "New Methods" framework since 2019 (case ID2019_089). On December 29, 2020, the method assessment phase was completed, and the report was published by the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH).
On April 26, 2021, the Decision Forum for New Methods made a decision regarding coverage of TAVI/TAVR across all surgical risk groups. The introduction of TAVI/TAVR for the treatment of patients with severe aortic stenosis is recommended in hospitals already performing cardiac surgery.
Earlier, the "New Methods" evaluated TAVI in severe aortic stenosis treatment in patients with intermediate surgical risk (ID2016_076), and the NIPH issued a report in 2019 on that topic. After that, the Ordering Forum asked NIPH to assess the method across all risk groups (including low and high), and so the initial decision (for the intermediate risk group) was postponed.
