Ultrasound in symptoms of acute scrotum assessed in Swedish Skåne Region
In Sweden, Skåne Region develops the knowledge base and prepares questions for decisions on the introduction of evidence-based health and medical care throughout Region Skåne. The medical evaluations are conducted in accordance with the principles for critical review of published scientific literature used by the National Board of Health and Social Evaluation.
In September 2019, Skåne Region has released a report for ultrasound in symptoms of the acute scrotum that aimed to understand whether increased use of ultrasound could improve the diagnostic of the studied condition. The following conclusions were provided:
- A literature review shows that there are no studies investigating the direct benefit of ultrasound in patients with symptoms of acute scrotum. However, high precision, sensitivity, and specificity of the method are outlined
- Current HTA report shows that changes in ultrasound use would mean an increase of the number of examinations that would lead to further need in the rise of the access to ultrasound out of hours
- An introduction of the method into routine practice should be followed by the simultaneous systematic establishment of a specific clinical scoring system
