The Trendwatch Report on MedTech innovations was published in the Netherlands

In May 2025, the Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZIN) published the Trendwatch Report on Healthcare Innovations in Specialist Medical Care (of December 2024), which identified MedTech innovations that may be introduced in specialist medical care in the coming years. 

The report explores whether an open request to field parties using a survey and scanning the portfolios of MedTech investors can be of added value in identifying impactful new MedTech innovations. The report uses inductive and deductive content analysis to analyze the collected data and identify broader trends with potential impact on Dutch healthcare. In total, 316 MedTech innovations were identified: 64 from the survey and 252 by scanning the portfolios. Based on the analyzed information, ZIN has divided the various innovations into 11 innovation clusters: 

  • Predictive models;
  • Neurological implants;
  • Surgical Navigation and Precision in Robotics;
  • Image-guided therapy;
  • Imaging diagnostics using Artificial Intelligence (AI);
  • Implants with the body's own tissue;
  • Cartilage regenerative techniques; 
  • Wound healing for non-healing wounds;
  • Digital self-management tools; 
  • Assistive robotics; 
  • Monitoring of vital signs using wearables.

For each of the 11 innovation clusters, ZIN analyzed its impact on four criteria (disease burden, costs, patient volume, and labor deployment) and ranked the innovation clusters with the most impact. The experts mentioned three clusters (imaging diagnostics using AI, predictive models, and image-guided therapy) as high-impact innovation trends in Dutch healthcare, as they are easy to implement and can improve care processes. However, ZIN also identified the clusters of image-guided therapy, assistive robotics, and monitoring of vital signs using wearables as posing the most significant risks for inclusion in the basic health insurance due to large target populations, integration challenges, and high investment costs. Careful integration of these innovations into current practice is necessary to avoid strategic and cost-related challenges. 

In 2025, ZIN plans to analyze two innovations from the innovation clusters “Monitoring of vital signs using wearables” and “Image-guided therapy.”
