Projects awarded under the Medical Specialist Care and Research program in the Netherlands

The Medical Specialist Care and Research (MedZO) program stimulates knowledge development on the effectiveness and efficiency of appropriate care in general hospitals, rehabilitation centers, categorical hospitals or institutions, and independent specialist medical care centers. The MedZO program was launched in 2024 as part of the Integrated Care Agreement (IZA) framework and has a total budget of €40 million until 2028. The following types of projects are eligible for the program:

  • Research on patient-relevant outcomes and alternative forms of financing for innovative treatment;
  • Research on developing and applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to promote appropriate and efficient care.

In September 2025, 18 projects were awarded subsidies from the subsidy round “Line 1: Appropriate and efficient care” of the Medical Specialist Care and Research program, including projects in the e-health, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and interventional radiology areas.

Examples of the awarded projects include:

  • Quantitative Optical Imaging of Parathyroid Perfusion for Prevention of Hypoparathyroidism;
  • SMART: measuring and remotely monitoring people after a stroke;
  • AI for EVAR: Optimizing the treatment, education, and follow-up of abdominal aneurysms;
  • ALPrES2MA: Anastomotic Leakage Prevention by Stenting the Superior Mesenteric Artery.
