First health app reimbursed in Belgium

The mHealthBelgium platform, created in 2018, is managed by the Belgian Federation of the medical technology industry (BeMedTech) and the Belgian Federation of Technology Companies (Agoria) in cooperation with the national authorities. The platform includes health applications according to a 3-step validation pyramid. Health apps that achieve level 3 of this pyramid can be reimbursed. This level was recently sub-divided into two sub-levels:

  • 3-, when socio-economic evidence is not proven, and an app is granted temporary reimbursement by INAMI; and
  • 3+, when the socio-economic evidence is proven, and a health app is granted regular reimbursement by INAMI.

MoveUP is the first digital health application that has reached the level 3 (for now 3-) level on the Mhealth validation pyramid. Through the moveUP Coach App, patients are offered an optimal treatment and rehabilitation for hip and knee arthroplasty, both before and after surgery.

The details of the procedure for notification for reimbursement of health apps by the developers were recently published by INAMI, and it can be seen on the INAMI webpage.
