Coverage positions published by the Dutch Healthcare Institute in December 2023

In December 2023, the Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZIN) published two coverage positions on high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in patients with essential tremor and radiotherapy with magnetic resonance linear accelerator (MR-linac).

In the Position on HIFU in patients with essential tremor, published on December 12, 2023, the ZIN concluded that it can be reimbursed under the basic health insurance in patients with moderate to severe essential tremor who do not respond adequately to medication and are not eligible for deep brain stimulation. The reimbursement will apply from August 5, 2022.

In the Position on MR-linac radiotherapy, published on November 28, 2023, the ZIN concluded that it cannot be reimbursed under the basic health insurance because there is no sufficient evidence to conclude that MR-linac complies with the “state of science and practice” criteria: MR-linac as a technical variant of existing radiotherapy methods has not demonstrated more precise treatment and fewer side effects.
